About the Avian Influenza Portal

The Avian Influenza Portal is a developing project for the operation of product networks and information services, for specialists, authorities and the general public in the area of Avian Influenza. This network of information sources is operated on the Internet and is promoted and coordinated by BIREME/PAHO/WHO.

The Avian Influenza Portal offers organized access to selected and relevant information to support the decision-making process on monitoring, prevention and control of Avian Influenza outbreaks, emphasizing the following information sources:

- National preparation plans (full text)
- International guidelines and recommendations (full text)
- Alert and epidemiological reports
- Catalog of question and answer portals
- Selected scientific and technical literature of the LILACS, MEDLINE, Cochrane, and SciELO
- Directory of congresses, meetings, and symposia
- Relevant site catalog
- News portal

The information sources can still be enriched, planned, reformulated, and/or translated into new products and information services, with a view to serving the particular information needs of users of specific communities.

In order to facilitate the access, all the documents and information sources were classified under specific subjects related to Avian Influenza: history, epidemiology, virology, prevention, and control, drugs and vaccines.

The construction and development of the Avian Influenza Portal will be assisted by a Committee formed by specialists. This Committee is under conformation and will have the participation of representatives from national and international institutions.

The Avian Influenza Portal is a developing initiative based on the model of the Virtual Health Library (VHL) and it is available in Portuguese, English, and Spanish.
